State Senator Larry Grooms has been proving the establishment wrong since he first ran for office. Back then, the pundits said he couldn’t win, said he didn’t have the connections or the money, said he didn’t know how to play the game.
That was 1997. Larry Grooms proved the establishment wrong then, and he’s been proving them wrong ever since. Since then, he’s been the underdog too many times to count.
A small businessman, Larry Grooms knows that common sense conservatism works, and he has the record to prove it. No matter the opposition, from day one Larry Grooms has been faithful to the conservative, pro-business, limited government philosophy of leadership that has always served South Carolina, best.
The Post & Courier wrote of Sen. Grooms that “No one understands the Senate’s fast-stepping around reform better…” and has praised him as “One of the chief advocates of change.”
Larry Grooms has consistently tackled the tough issues that many in state government are afraid to take on. From leading the way in reforming the state Department of Transportation and helping protect South Carolina’s family farms, to offering a well-reasoned plan to bring equity to school funding, to offering the first comprehensive tax reform in nearly a decade, Larry has made conservative reform his focus.
And Larry Grooms is still leading the reform movement. This year he worked diligently for badly-needed changes to the way the State Ports Authority does business. His Port Reform Act will ensure that South Carolina’s primary economic engines remain competitive tools for development, helping maintain and create valuable, stable jobs.
Senator Larry Grooms represents parts of Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties. He is Chairman of the Transportation Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee.
He was named Legislator of the Year by the American Legion, while the South Carolina Association of Taxpayers recognizes him as a Friend of the Taxpayer.
Other accolades have come from the South Carolina Farm Bureau, the Humane Society of the United States, and the South Carolina Policy Council. For his work on behalf of South Carolina’s families, he was named a Legislative Champion by the Palmetto Family Council, and he received the United Methodist Relief Center’s Westendorf Award for Service to Those in Need.
